FAMILY OVERLANDING

a Journey of a lifetime

The Van Stralens, a family of five, have been living “Off The Grid” and “On The Road” for more than three years. They use two impressive set up´s: a large motor home which pulls their Jeep Wrangler or the Jeep Wrangler with off-road trailer and two roof tents for extended overland trips lasting weeks to months. The Camp Champ is used in both cases as an outside kitchen. The motto of the family? “Epic Family Road Trip”

FAMILY VAN STRALEN, CANADA: "We love our Camp Champ outdoor kitchen! Today we are celebrating Canadian Thanksgiving and cooking our big Thanksgiving dinner at our camp in style!"

World trip as family of five

Peter, Carol and their three children decided in 2015 to sell all their possessions and live a life as travelers from now on. Peter is a company coach and keynote speaker. Just think about the meaning of the title of his program “Work Hard, Play Hard, Care” for a while. The family realized “that time is more precious than money, memories more valuable than things, and experiencing new places, cultures, religions and people is a better education than you can get by just reading about it.” “So – we did what anyone else would do – we sold our house, packed up our belongings and hit the road full time.” they say.

Overland Expo

In the fall of 2016, we met the Van Stralen’s at the Overland Expo East in North Carolina, where they spontaneously bought one of the kitchens we brought along to add to their impressive Jeep overland set up. The family already had a year of experience on tour and was very enthusiastic about the possibility of being able to use a “real kitchen” on the way! They planned to ship the Jeep trailer from New York to New Zealand in just a few days, so they used the expo to complete their Overland equipment.

Canadian Thanks Giving

Despite the tight schedule, family Van Stralen insisted on celebrating “Canadian Thanks Giving” on their new kitchen before the group visited our partner OK4WD in New Jersey to scrupulously wash the Jeep to make it ready for the shipping to New Zealand. Due to the fragile ecosystem, New Zealand customs is particularly restrictive for such temporary imports, and dirt on and under the car would have prevented imports.

New Zealand

The bridged the waiting time until the arrival in the distant harbor in Australia and Bali. When the Jeep finally arrived and could be properly cleared in customs, the roof tents were reinstalled and after some trips were made, the Van Stralens found a lonely section of the “Bay Of Plenty”. This is the place, where the awesome video at the end of this page was filmed.

Home Sweet Home

Back in North America, the jeep was hitched to the motor home again and the impressive journey continued with the no less impressive tandem. The pictures of this fantastic “Road Trip” are very kindly shared by the family Van Stralen on our website and are transferring a good feeling for their “Way Of Life Of The Grid”.

And the journey still goes on …

Bon voyage, guys!
